Fermentazione malolattica in acciaio.
Bright red. Flint, ripe red cherry and sweet spices on the very ripe and forward but ultimately fresh nose. The sweet spice notes and a refined, austere mouthfeel are typical of the S.Angelo in Colle terroir. Closes juicy and fresh, with lively flavors of red cherry and more sweet spices, plus hints of underbrush. Ages one year in both used 30-50hL oak barrels and used barriques, then spends six months in bottle before being released for sale. Made from 15-year old vineyards. (Ian D’Agata)
The 2018 Rosso di Montalcino is gorgeous, mixing both primary fruit and earth tones to create a wonderfully balanced expression, showing crushed cherries in an array of smoky minerals, dusty soil and sweet herbs. On the palate, I'm finding soft textures, given life by zesty acids and backed by a core of tart blackberry, spiced-orange, and saline-minerality, as a hint of youthful tannin collects on the senses. The finish is medium in length, wonderfully fresh yet focused, as its vibrant fruits give way to lingering florals. The 2018 Rosso is yet another overperformer from Il Poggione. (Eric Guido)
There’s plenty of nut-meg and dried-herb character in addition to redcurrants and Chinese spices. Medium body, lovely and grippy tannins and a tight finish. So well-crafted. Drink now.
Pure, fruity and elegant, featuring cherry, plum, currant and iron aromas and flavors. Well-structured, yet balanced with a lingering, fresh aftertaste of fruit, iron and leather notes. Drink now through 2024.
Bright, delicate and vibrant with berry and floral flavors. Accents of earth, tobacco and spice add interest as they linger on the finish. Well-rounded and long. Drink now through 2023
The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is dark and youthfully inward, as nuances of black currant and licorice are offset by crushed ashen stone. It’s silky and enveloping, yet with a saline-core of minerality and bright acid that create a more tactile feel, as a saturation of tart red berries form toward the close. This tapers off long and lightly structured, yet still quite fresh, begging for a short stay in the cellar before revealing all of its charms. Wow. The 2020 from Il Poggione mixes the warmth of the vintage with the house style to create a truly captivating Rosso.
Plum and berry with some smoky bark undertones. It’s medium-bodied with delicious fruit and a crunchy finish. Drink now.
